Breast Cancer
Bariatric surgery is associated with reduced risk of breast cancer in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women.
A study published in the prestigious journal, Annals of Surgery, in 2020 by Feigelson et. al. found that in patients with a BMI >35, bariatric surgery was associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer.
The findings of this study are very significant because of all the risk factors for breast cancer, there aren't many we can modify. However, obesity is one risk factor we can modify and we have evidence that by treating obesity, we can reduce breast cancer rates.
